The Erie MSA is solely comprised of Erie County, in the northwest corner of Pennsylvania on the south shore of Lake Erie, about 120 miles north of Pittsburgh. The county is less than 100 miles from both Buffalo, New York and Cleveland, Ohio and lies midway between them. Within 500 miles of Erie, there is a population base of more than 130 million people, including New York City and Chicago. Erie County has an area of 802 square miles and a population density of approximately 334 people per square mile. Eighty percent of the population is considered to be urban. The largest municipality is the City of Erie, which is on the lakeshore near the center of the northern boundary of the county.
